Wildfires

Flames to Ashes

Created using charcoal from burned trees, and acrylic on varied surfaces. Work in progress.
Fires are an important part of the Forest's ecosystem. Many plants, animals and insects depend on fires for survival. However, wild fires are destructive, deadly and detrimental to humans -- At least that is how many viewed them in the early 20th century which resulted in decades of eliminating all fires.  Everything from Smokey the bear to fire towers were put in place to help prevent and stop all fires from happening.  Fires were even used danger and the enemy in popular culture icons like Disney's Bambi.

Over the last few decades, scientists are learning more and more about the forest, and are discovering exactly how important forests are to the natural cycle of life. Forest Fires help wipe out infestation of beetles that kill trees. Certain pine cones from trees like lodgepole pines, can only open with the heat of a fire.
